We are Larry and Debra, a couple who on March 7, 2019 started our Adventure 2.0 living full time in a 24 foot Class C motor home and traveling.
Adventure 1.0 was our lives raising a family, having careers, and being involved in our community. We focused on our children and watched our two daughters grow into adults. Our older daughter, Zoe, graduated from the University of Notre Dame, went on to get a masters and PhD from Princeton and is now working and playing in Colorado. Our younger daughter, Sydney, graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point, married a fellow West Pointer (a true gentleman we adore) and they welcomed a baby daughter in November 2022.
My parents passed away in the early 2000’s, but we helped Larry’s parents as they aged, including moving his father up to be near us after his mother passed away. His father, Joe, eventually lived at the veterans nursing home just minutes away from Larry’s work so they saw each other at least once daily. Larry would take Joe out to eat, to dancing lessons (even in his 90’s he loved to dance), and have him come to the house on the weekends be a part of our family. When Joe passed away at 96 in 2017, Larry worked to have his parents interred at Arlington National cemetery in a lovely ceremony. We realized that we were now the oldest living generation and it was time to craft our future while our girls pursued theirs. We both retired from our careers, sold the house and put the few things we couldn’t part with in a small storage unit.
We decided to start our travels in the small RV that we’d enjoyed camping in as a family until we decided whether or not this life on the road was something we enjoyed. Four Nomad-a-versaries (anniversaries of nomad life) and an added Jeep later, we can say that there is no anticipated end in sight! We’ve seen a fraction of the beauty God created in United States and parts of Canada, learned so much history, and met some truly wonderful people. Family, friends and fellow travelers have asked to keep up with what we’re doing, so this blog is for sharing our adventures. Larry takes the pictures and I’ll do the writing. We will start with 2023, and likely be at least a month behind because, well, we’re not usually sitting in the RV! I’ll work at filling in the previous years as time allows.
Our name “Free Range Fun Hogs” comes from an encounter we had in Idaho at City of Rocks National Park early one morning. We were mountain biking and stopped to chat with another biker who happened to be a climbing guide out for a bike ride before his first clients of the day. He was curious about our travels and after listening awhile exclaimed that we were “fun hogs” because it sounded like we actively sought out fun activities. Later, I added in the “free range” part because we are always on the go. Free Range Fun Hogs – hogging fun adventures wherever we roam!
